In a big development coming from the state of Uttar Pradesh, Congress president Rahul Gandhi is trailing against BJP leader Smriti Irani in the Gandhi family bastion of Amethi. As per media reports, Irani is ahead by about 2,000 votes.

The Congress president had famously also decided to contest from Wayanad in Kerala, which led many to question if he was fearing defeat in Amethi. BJP has taken initial leads in 19 constituencies, with Congress leading in another four. The SP-BSP combine has a lead on seven seats.

The Amethi Lok Sabha constituency of Uttar Pradesh is currently held by Congress chief Rahul Gandhi. This is the second time Smriti Zubin Irani of BJP is taking on Gandhi in the Congress bastion, after an unsuccessful bid in 2014.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi is trailing against BJP's Smriti Irani in Amethi. The UP seat is currently held by Gandhi. In 2014 Lok Sabha Elections, the Congress leader had beat Irani by receiving 46.70 per cent of the votes cast in this constituency.

The Lok Sabha constituency went to polls in the fifth phase of the election -- on May 6 and recorded a voter turnout of 54.05 per cent. The seven phases of the Lok Sabha polls 2019 covered a total of 543 constituencies. Voting in the first phase was conducted on April 11.

Simultaneous elections were held to the assemblies of Arunachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Sikkim, and Odisha -- the results for which will also be out today.
