Srinagar: Nearly two years after the reorganization of Jammu and Kashmir, the Administration of Ladakh has declared the snow leopard as a state animal and a black neck crane as a state bird for the Union Territory. A notification in this regard was issued by the Forest, Ecology, and Environment of the Union Territory. "Hon'ble Lieutenant Governor of Union Territory of Ladakh is happy to declare "Snow Leopard" (Panther Unica) and "Black-Necked Crane" (Gras Nicricolis) as the state animals and territory birds of the Union Territory of Ladakh respectively.''

The same notification will come into force from the date of issue of this notification. The black-necked crane, which was also a state bird of the then state of Jammu and Kashmir, is found only in Ladakh in India. A black-necked crane is a long bird classified as "weak." Its height is about 1.35 meters, and the spread of wings is about 2-2.5 meters. It weighs about 6-8 kgs. It has a bright red crown on its head. Normally seen in couples, their courtship dance has inspired charts - one of Ladakh's popular folk dances.

The same hilly region of the Western and Eastern Himalayas is the habitat of snow leopards in India. They are mainly found in Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh. It is fair to mention that Hangul was a state animal in the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, including Ladakh.
