Bareilly: sixty-one cows died due to nitrate poisoning after overeating green millet fodder in a shelter in Amroha's Hasanpur area, a medical report said.

According to Amroha District Magistrate BK Tripathi, the village development officer, who was also in charge of the cow shelter, has been suspended and a FIR has been filed against the fodder provider.

Dr. Triveni Singh, the director of the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), reported on Saturday that a team of IVRI scientists had thoroughly examined the cow shelter and performed a post-mortem examination on the cattle. He said, it was found during the inspection that the cows had consumed an excessive amount of green "bajra" (millets), which were high in nitrate.

Dr. KP Singh, the head scientist at IVRI, said that the cows' deaths were caused by haemorrhages brought on by being overfed polluted grain. "The picture will be clear once its test report comes in," he said, "since the viscera of the cow's kidney, liver, heart, and lungs have been preserved." On Thursday, district officials said that the cows in the shelter became ill in the evening after consuming hay. By Thursday night, there had been about 55 cow deaths, and by Friday morning, there had been more than 60. The shelter home housed more than 180 cows.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered an investigation and urged the Minister of Animal Husbandry to go to Amroha on Thursday evening in response to the deaths. Aditya Langeh, the SP for Amroha, announced the formation of four teams to apprehend the case's defendants. Police have taken several persons into custody to question them, although they have not yet officially announced any arrests.
