Parliament summons Twitter officials to appear before them in Parliament Complex

The Parliamentary Committee on Information and Technology of Parliament has asked the officer of microblogging social media platform Twitter to appear before it on June 18. A Twitter official has been asked to appear in the middle of the ongoing clash with the Centre over new IT laws. Under which the Parliamentary Committee has also summoned an officer of the Department of Electronics and Information Technology to take his stand. This is going to lead to a discussion on the safety of women in the vacant digital space. Sources close to Parliament House said that the discussion with the social media company is going to take the discussion forward.

It has been learnt that the panel may question the new IT law and some recent incidents in which the representative media controversy and the New Guidelines can be questioned by the Delhi Police on the new guidelines and may be discussed further. The panel of the Parliamentary Committee will first hear Twitter's stand and thereafter give an opportunity to the officer of the Department of Electronics and Information Technology to present evidence on special attention to the safety of women in the digital world, including protecting citizens' rights, misusing social media or online news media platforms.

The committee is headed by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor.  It has been learnt that the clash between the Central Government and Twitter started in February this year. Meanwhile, the Union Information Ministry had asked Twitter to remove and block content that was criticizing the Modi government's administration.
