LUCKNOW:  A panel of experts from Chandigarh-based National Institute of Epidemiology of ICMR is conducting a survey of soil-transmitted helminths prevalence among children studying in the government primary and upper primary schools in Uttar Pradesh.

As per  World Health Organization, helminth infections caused by soil-transmitted helminths hinder young children's nutritional and physical development.

The basic Shiksha Adhikari of more than 30 districts in the state have received a letter from Shubha Singh, director of basic education, urging them to support the concerned team as needed.

The concerned block education officers of the district have also been asked to be intimated about the same. As part of the study, stool samples from school-age children are being collected, and temporary microscopic centres have been set up at the nearest medical facility (community/primary health centre) to examine the samples under a microscope.
Beginning on November 21, the survey will run through December 18.

The study is being carried out at schools in the following cities: Ghazipur, Gorakhpur, Hapur, Hardoi, Jalaun, Jaunpur, Amroha, Kannauj, Lakhimpur Kheri, Kushinagar, Lucknow, Mahoba, Mainpuri, Mathura, Mau, Meerut, Mirzapur, Pilibhit, Pratapgarh, Rae Bareli, Rampur, Saharanpur, Sant Kabir Nagar.
