GUWAHATI: Nagaland government's SIT will begin questioning officers and soldiers involved in the incident from Thursday in Jorhat, Assam to probe the 'failed operation' carried out by 21 Para-Special Forces. In fact, the government is investigating the case of the death of 14 civilians during the 'disturbance' during an anti-militancy campaign in the Mon district of Nagaland on December 4. The government had termed the incident as a case of "misidentification". Nine others, including a soldier, were killed in the violence that erupted after the incident.

The SIT may submit its report next month. Apart from this, the Indian Army has also agreed to allow the Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up by the Nagaland government to take statements of all the military personnel involved in the operation in Oting village, official sources said. He has said that the Indian Army is cooperating fully with the SIT set up by the state government and everything is being given to them in a time-bound manner.

An army team visited the spot on Wednesday and gathered the necessary information. A statement issued by the Army's Kolkata-headquartered Eastern Command said that its 'Court of Inquiry' team led by Major General inspected the spot to understand the circumstances in which the incident could have happened. The Army said that the Court of Inquiry is progressing rapidly and all efforts are being made to end it at the earliest. The 'failed' campaign led to massive public outcry in Nagaland and intensified demand for repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA).
