Internet services were finally back on Monday after a three-week net-blackout in Somalia.

The outage that caused a loss of $10m a day had sparked anger wide across the country and affected the central and southern parts of the country including the capital, Mogadishu. The government had called it a “major disaster.” Major companies reported millions of dollars in revenue losses. University studies were disrupted. The internet outage had also complicated the ongoing battle against drought in the country and stranded patients who were seeking medical attention abroad as they couldn’t access online paperwork.

Hormuud Telecom, the country’s largest telecom company, announced the restoration of service in a message to subscribers. Thousands of residents posted comments of celebration and relief on their social media sites Monday. Many posted their photos taken during the recent Eid Al-Fitr Muslim holiday.

“The internet return is the return of my business profit, thanks to Allah,” restaurant owner Liban Ahmed posted on his Facebook page. Other people took to the social media for congratulating one another after missing the connectivity for 23 days, some of which have not received for all those days. Some of them writing amazing posts, some of whom comparing the absence of the internet like being in a prison.
