Somnath, located on the western coast of India in the state of Gujarat, is a place steeped in history, spirituality, and architectural brilliance. Revered as one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, Somnath holds great religious significance for Hindus and attracts pilgrims from all over the world. Somnath temple stands at the shore of the Arabian ocean on the western corner of Indian subcontinent in Gujarat State. This pilgrimage is one of the oldest and finds its reference in the ancient texts like Skandpuran, Shreemad Bhagavat, Shivpuran etc. The hymn from Rig-Veda quoted below mention the Bhagvan Someshwar along with the great pilgrimage like Gangaji, Yamunaji and Eastward Saraswati. This signifies the ancient value of this Tirthdham.

The history of Somnath stretches back over a millennium. The original temple is believed to have been built in ancient times by the Moon God, Som, after whom the place derives its name. The Moon God is said to have been relieved from the curse of his father-in-law Daksha Prajapati by the blessings of Lord Shiva. It is said that Moon God married 27 dauthers of Daksha Prajapati but only favored Rohini. Due to this his other wivess got jealous and in anger Daksha cursed Moon. To get relieve from the curse moon did penance and built this temple for God Shiva. It stood as a symbol of faith and grandeur until it faced a series of invasions and destruction by foreign invaders. Legendary figures such as Mahmud of Ghazni and Allauddin Khilji sought to plunder its wealth, but each time; the temple was rebuilt, reflecting the unwavering spirit and resilience of the Indian people.
