New Delhi: Congress working president Sonia Gandhi has appointed Birjit Sinha as the head of the party's Tripura unit. According to a party statement, the Congress has also appointed five executive heads for the Tripura unit, including Mohammed Bilal Miya, Manik Deb, Sushanto Chakraborty, Purneeta Chakma and Pradeep Vardhan.

The party's statement said, "Congress President Sonia Gandhi has appointed Birjit Sinha as the chairman of the Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee with immediate effect. The party appreciates the contribution of outgoing state president P Kanti Biswas.' Sonia Gandhi along with 10 vice presidents, 18 general secretaries and 29 secretaries has also given the green signal to set up a state Congress committee. A 35-member executive committee has been constituted, including a former CM, former state party president and veteran leader.

Several former MLAs including former CM Sameer Ranjan Burman, former party state president Gopal Roy and Queen Bibhu Kumari Devi have been appointed as members of Tripura's executive committee. Sinha's appointment as state party president comes at a time when several Congress leaders like Subal Bhowmik, Prakash Das (former minister), Mujibar Islam Majumdar, Mohammad Idris Mia, Tapan Dutta, Panna Deb, Bapti Chakraborty have resigned from the party and joined Trinamool Congress (TMC).
