New Delhi: Sonia Gandhi, former President of the Congress party, has been unanimously re-elected as the chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP). The decision was made at a CPP meeting held at the Central Hall of Parliament on Saturday. During the meeting, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge proposed Sonia Gandhi's name for the position, which was seconded by party members Gaurav Gogoi, K Sudhakaran, and Tariq Anwar.

In her speech after being re-elected, Sonia Gandhi expressed gratitude towards the party members for their resilience during the recent Lok Sabha elections. She described the election results as a "political and moral defeat" for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, emphasizing that his leadership has lost its moral authority. Sonia Gandhi commended the party for functioning cohesively in the face of adversities created by the ruling party's campaign, which she characterized as "full of lies and defamation."

Highlighting the challenges ahead, Sonia Gandhi stressed the importance of preventing polarization and safeguarding secular and democratic values enshrined in the Constitution. She urged party members to remain vigilant and proactive in upholding parliamentary democracy.

Following the CPP meeting, several Congress leaders expressed their support for Sonia Gandhi's leadership. Mallikarjun Kharge lauded her re-election, stating that her guidance will be instrumental for the party. Other leaders, including Bhupesh Baghel, Gaurav Gogoi, and Revanth Reddy, also praised Sonia Gandhi's leadership and expressed confidence in her ability to lead the party effectively.

Meanwhile, there were calls for Rahul Gandhi to take on the role of Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. The Congress Working Committee unanimously passed a resolution recommending Rahul Gandhi for the position. Rahul Gandhi, who won the Lok Sabha elections from Raebareli and Wayanad constituencies, is seen as a key figure in steering the party's opposition strategy.

The recent Lok Sabha elections saw the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) falling short of a majority, while the INDIA bloc, including the Congress, made significant gains. The Congress's improved performance signifies a resurgence, challenging the BJP's dominance and setting the stage for a robust opposition in Parliament.
