New Delhi: Interim President of Congress Sonia Gandhi termed the approval of Parliament on Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) as a victory for narrow thinking on the pluralism of the country and said that today will be remembered as a black day in the history of the Constitution. After passing this bill from the Rajya Sabha, Sonia Gandhi issued a statement on Wednesday, saying that this legislator challenges the views of our ancestors who have fought for secularism in the country.
It is noteworthy that this bill was passed in the Lok Sabha two days ago. Sonia Gandhi said that this bill breaks the tradition of not favouring on the basis of religion, caste, creed, language or gender in our country. Sonia Gandhi said that we have always given importance to people of all countries and all religions. We have never let the safety of a person in the community be undermined and have given importance to everyone's voice.
Sonia Gandhi said that it is unfortunate that this bill has come at a time when the country is celebrating the 150th birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. The bill provides for the granting of citizenship of India to refugees from Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Christian and Parsi communities who have been tortured on the basis of religion from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh. Congress has been opposing this bill since the beginning.
