New Delhi: A large meeting of party general secretaries, state in-charge and Congress presidents of all states has started at the Congress headquarters here on Thursday under the leadership of Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi. This is the first major meeting of the party after Sonia Gandhi took over the reins of the party. Sonia Gandhi is presiding over this meeting and Priyanka Vadra as National General Secretary is present in this meeting.

The special thing is that this is the first meeting in which Rahul Gandhi is not present after being removed from the post of National President of Congress.

Actually, Rahul Gandhi does not currently hold any position in the party. That is why those meetings have not been attended. In the Lok Sabha elections, former Congress President Rahul Gandhi lost the traditional Lok Sabha seat of the party to Amethi. Here he had to face defeat from Union Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and current Union Minister Smriti Irani.

However, Rahul Gandhi managed to reach Parliament from Wayanad Lok Sabha seat in Kerala. After the embarrassing defeat of the party in the Lok Sabha elections, Rahul Gandhi resigned from the post of party president. After a prolonged tussle, Sonia Gandhi was appointed the interim president of the party.
