Guwahati: Former Assam CM Tarun Gogoi has passed away. He was 84 years old. He breathed his last at the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on Monday evening. Tarun Gogoi, who had been ill for a long time, was completely on life support system. Congress Working President Sonia Gandhi has expressed condolences to Tarun Gogoi's family members and his son Gaurav Gogoi by writing a letter.

In a letter written in the name of Gaurav, Sonia Gandhi said that the information about the death of your beloved father was received. It is very sad. Tarun Gogoi was one of the most senior leaders of the Congress Party, receiving praise and respect for his extraordinary knowledge, vision and ability. With his many years of experience as an MLA, MP, Union Minister and CM of Assam, he was someone we could always consult.

Sonia has further said in her letter that I know how much honor Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi held her. For me too, this loss is personal - I can never forget the warmth and care that she showed for me in my many visits to Assam. During those visits, I saw how much he loved all the communities and people of Assam, how much he had done for them all and for their progress and welfare. No wonder he was the most liked face of Assam and the longest-serving CM of the state.
