During an onboard visit at sea yesterday, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal reviewed the progress of the indigenous aircraft carrier 'Vikrant"s sea trials. Vikrant was designed by the Directorate of Naval Design (DND) of the Indian Navy and is being built at Cochin Shipyard Ltd. (CSL). On October 24, the ship sailed out for the second round of sea trials. According to the Indian Navy, the ship is now in the second phase of sea trials, which includes detailed trials and testing of propulsion machinery, electrical and electronics suites, deck machinery, lifesaving appliances, and ship systems.

Following the sea trials, the minister pressed Cochin Shipyard Ltd to deliver the ship on time in April 2022 so that it could be commissioned by August 2022 to commemorate the 'Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.'

With the delivery of the aircraft carrier, India will join a select group of nations that have the capability to design and build an aircraft carrier in-house, demonstrating the government's Make in India initiative. Designed by the Indian Navy’s Directorate of Naval Design, Vikrant is being built at Cochin Shipyard, a public sector shipyard entity under Sonowal’s Ministry.
