CAPE TOWN: South Africa's legislative capital, has reported that the fire in Parliament, which started two days ago, has flared up again.
According to sources, the space under the roof sheeting of the National Assembly's lower house was on fire, and about 34 firefighters were battling it, according to the agency. The fire department had scaled down resources from 9 p.m. on Sunday night, according to the municipal government, and the fire in the building was under control except on the fourth level, which was still smouldering.
The fire has destroyed both the National Assembly Wing and the Old Assembly Wing, which was built in 1885 and houses the National Council of Provinces, the upper house of parliament (NCOP). On Sunday, the fire in the old wing was put out.
The National Assembly building's interior was "extensively devastated," and the National Assembly Wing's structural ceiling fell. The original wing's third level, which had office space and a gym, was gutted by fire, and the roof partially collapsed.
According to NCOP Chairperson Amos Masondo, the incident resulted in the National Assembly chamber "completely burning down."According to Masondo, it is "one of the most significant losses" caused by the fire.
