South Africa: Minister of Health Joe Phaahla announced on Friday that the South African government will set up vaccination sites near at least 1,000 voting stations to inoculate people against Covid-19 during the November 1 local government elections. He said during a virtual briefing on the country's Covid-19 vaccination roll-out that the sites will be set up outside the voting area so that they don't interfere with voting.

"We hope that this arrangement will be convenient for people because they will have travelled from their homes and will be able to vote and get vaccinated all in one trip," Phaahla said. "We welcome the fact that political parties have no objections to this arrangement," the Minister said, adding that the government will partner with the private sector to provide free rides to health workers and to reward top-performing teams of health workers with food vouchers.

Phaahla also announced a 26 million rand (USD1 million) pilot programme to reward 260,000 people over 60 who get their first vaccination in November. Each of them will receive a supermarket voucher worth R100. There have been 2,921,114 Covid cases and 89,104 deaths in the country so far.
