The Unification Ministry in Seoul stated that South Korea is closely monitoring North Korea's nuclear and missile operations with the US. The declaration comes after reports that the North Korean regime appeared to be keeping a nuclear reactor operating at its main Yongbyon site.

According to recent satellite photos, steam was detected coming from the 5-megawatt reactor on Wednesday, indicating at least one generator is in functioning, as US monitoring website predicted. When asked about the claim, deputy Ministry spokesman Cha Duck-chul said the government is keeping an eye on the North's nuclear facilities but declined to clarify "intelligence concerns."

"The government continues to watch North Korea's nuclear and missile programmes with close coordination between South Korea and the United States," he said during a press conference.
