SEOUL: South Korea and the US agreed Friday to establish a communication channel between their presidential offices to coordinate policy on cutting-edge technology and supply chains, according to the South's presidential office.

The agreement was reached during a phone call between Wang Yun-jong, the presidential secretary for economic security, and Tarun Chhabra, the White House National Security Council's senior director for technology and national security, hours before US President Joe Biden's visit to Seoul, according to reports.

"Through the newly inaugurated 'economic security dialogue,' the two sides seek to interact often and regularly on economic security challenges and reaction plans," the presidential office said in a statement.

The establishment of the new dialogue channel demonstrates the two sides' commitment to closely coordinating policy and responding jointly to key issues affecting their "technology alliance," such as semiconductors, secondary batteries, artificial intelligence, and supply chain establishment, according to the statement.

According to the report, the US side expressed optimism for an early face-to-face meeting and offered the South Korean delegation to visit Washington next month.
