A 96-year-old women living in a elderly care home in central Spain became the first person in the country to be vaccinated against Covid-19 on Sunday, in an event broadcast by national television. Araceli Rosario Hidalgo Sanchez said felt "nothing" from the shot with a smile after being injected. The Los Olmos care home was picked to kick off the country's inoculation campaign because it sits near a Pfizer storage depot, where vaccines were delivered from Belgium Saturday ahead of nationwide distribution.

Carer Monica Tapias followed Araceli as the second Spaniard to receive the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. No cases of Covid-19 have so far been detected among the staff or residents. "It's a great source of pride and a great satisfaction for us, we're representing all the retirement homes in Spain," director Marina Vadillo said Thursday. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) approved the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine last Monday, after which the way is open for injections across the 27-member bloc.

Salvador Illa, the country's health minister says a delay in the fresh delivery of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine, due to a Pfizer "logistics issue" was there but is now resolved. He said a new batch of the vaccine will now be delivered on Tuesday instead of Monday. Spain has so far seen 49,824 deaths from COVID-19, and 1,854,951 confirmed cases and the Health Minister says he expects around 70% of the country's population to be immunized by the end of the summer.
