Catalonia’s political parties voted on Friday to postpone regional elections from February 14 until May 30 due to a recent surge in COVID-19 cases. Catalonia acting leader Pere Aragones signed a decree to change the date of the regional elections from Feb. 14 to May 30 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The decision was taken after an extraordinary session of the Consultative Council of the Catalan government. As of Thursday, the region had reported a total of 448,887 COVID-19 cases and 17,867 deaths since the start of the pandemic, according to the latest data available.

The Catalan Health Department on Friday published a prediction that places the peak of COVID-19 infections and occupation of intensive care beds with COVID-19 patients in February. It added that the situation will have improved by the end of May, thanks to an increase in temperatures and the effects of the vaccination plan. Nationwide, Spain has to date recorded more than 2.25 million cases and 53,314 deaths.
