LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh government will start a special campaign to provide farmers cover against probable crop loss. Agriculture Minister Surya Pratap Shahi will officially launch the drive, and the department plans to start it on the first week of July. Under the Center's ambitious PM Crop Insurance Scheme (PMCIS), it will cover those development blocks with lower farm insurance coverage.

Sources in the UP government claim that as of today, 27.5 lakh farmers in the state of UP have received compensation of Rs. 3,074.6 crore in their accounts through the PMCIS.

This includes paying nearly 7 lakh farmers Rs 654.8 crore in crop compensation during the Kharif season of 2021. 19.9 lakh farmers have insured 14.2 lakh hectares for Rabi 2021–2022.

The drive would encompass a few development blocks in each of the eight aspirational districts: Bahraich (Risia block), Shravasti (Sirsia), Balrampur (Utraula), Siddharth Nagar (Latan), Fatehpur (Bijaipur), Chitrakoot (Ramnagar), and Chandauli (Niyamtabad).

As per data from the Union agricultural ministry, the cost of crop loss in Uttar Prapdesh more than doubled between 2018-19 and 2019-20.
