South Africa: President Cyril   Ramaphosa is acting upon several referrals made by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to the Presidency, regarding disciplinary action for specific individuals - following the probe into the Department of Health's Digital Vibes communication contract.

Former health minister Zweli Mkhize may have committed actions of criminality before he stepped down from his position in the department. This is according to the damning report by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) presented to the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa) on Wednesday.

Phaahla said that in the next few days and weeks there will unfortunately be some action and that will have some impact also on our capacity as a department. He added that “when wrong things have happened and investigations have led to findings, then people have to be held answerable”.

However, Phaahla said it was regrettable because “it will have an impact on our capacity, because from what I have seen, a number of people will have to be on suspension, pending charges… if you are already working with a skeleton staff and four or five people have to go away for a month or so, it just means your management is thin. But it’s a consequence which must follow”.

In the interests of fairness and in terms of the Promotion of Access to Information Act , the Presidency said it had sent third-party notices to all persons or entities referred to in the SIU's Department of Health's Digital Vibes investigative report.
