New Delhi: The Union Government has introduced the SPG Security Bill in the Lok Sabha. According to this new bill, SPG protection will no longer be provided to the family of the former PM. The present PM's family will get SPG protection only if he stays with the Prime Minister at his government residence. The former PM and his family will be given SPG protection for five years. However, SPG protection will be given to the former PM's family only if the entire family stays with the former PM.

It is noteworthy that the Central Government has withdrawn the SPG cover of the Gandhi family, hence the SPG Bill is very important in view of the recent developments. In the Gandhi family, Sonia Gandhi, her son and former Congress president Rahul Gandhi and her daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had got an SPG protection cover since the assassination of former PM Rajiv Gandhi. Apart from this, former PM Manmohan Singh was also given SPG protection, but after the security review, the security of SPG was withdrawn from everyone.

Congress has protested the removal of SPG security. The Congress had also raised the issue in Parliament and protested on the road. Former PM Manmohan Singh has now been given Z Plus security cover by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), while according to the government order, the Gandhi family too will soon be provided security cover under the same grade.
