New Delhi: Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju on Thursday honored India's Wushu World Championship medalists Praveen, Yoonam Sanathoi Devi, Poonam Khatri and Vikrant Balyan. India won a total of four medals from one gold, two silver and one bronze at the World Championships held in Shanghai, China last month.

Praveen, who won the gold medal, was awarded a check of Rs 20 lakh, while silver medalist Sanathoi Devi and Poonam received a check of Rs 14-14 lakh.


Vikrant received a check of eight lakh rupees for winning the bronze medal. Praveen had created history for India, becoming the first Wushu player to win a gold medal in the men's event. "My army coach and mentor constantly encouraged me and assured me that I could do this," said Praveen, 22, of the Army.

This boosted my confidence and every night while sleeping I used to tell myself that I can win a gold medal. After this, I worked hard during the camp two months ago and I was successful in winning the gold. "My hard work brought color, for this I worked hard, which has brought me to this point.

Rijiju said on the occasion, "I am happy that four Wushu players won medals at the World Championship." I also praised the Wushu Federation for their good work. India had won a total of four medals from one gold, two silver and one bronze at the World Championships held in Shanghai, China last month.
