Colombo: Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has formed a 13-member task force to establish the concept of 'one country, one law' in the country. It is headed by a staunch Buddhist monk known for his anti-Muslim attitude. In the 2019 elections, the slogan of 'One Country One Law' was Rajapaksa' and he received tremendous support from Buddhists, the majority of the country's population.

The Task Force set up by the President of Sri Lanka to establish the concept of 'One Country, One Law' is led by Galagodath Gyansara (Galagoda Gnanasara), a staunch Buddhist monk and a symbol of anti-Muslim sentiment in Sri Lanka. Gyansara's Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) or Buddhist power force was accused of involvement in the anti-Muslim riots in 2013. The task force consists of four Muslim scholars as members, but minority Tamils have not been represented.

The Task Force will submit a final report in this regard on February 28, 2022, while it will inform the President about the progress of work every month. The 'One Country One Law' campaign gained momentum after the Fidayeen attack on the occasion of Easter in 2019. The attack claimed 270 lives, including 11 Indians. The attack was alleged by the extremist Islamist group National Tawheed Jamaat (NTJ). India has also been demanding a uniform civil code for a long time, but there seems to be no significant cooperation from the opposition in implementing the law.
