Sri Lanka to provide special allowance for low-income families

COLOMBO: Sri Lankan government would grant special financial allowance to low-income households impacted by the present economic crisis for three months starting in May, according to Minister of Mass Media Nalaka Godahewa.

During a press conference, the minister stated that low-income households have been disproportionately affected by the country's present economic crisis, and that quick relief is required, according to the Xinhua reports.

According to Godahewa, the cabinet of ministers agreed to grant the special allowance from May to July under the Contingent Emergency Response Component (CERC) Pool funds, a World Bank Group emergency response mechanism.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin announced the state will soon send 40,000 tonnes of food, 500 tonnes of milk powder, and life-saving pharmaceuticals to Sri Lanka, which is suffering from a terrible economic crisis.
