Colombo: On the occasion of Sri Lanka's 72nd Independence Day, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa on Tuesday assured the people of the defence of democracy in the island nation, including freedom of expression. According to the newspaper Colombo Gazette, while addressing the country from the Independence Square in Colombo, Rajapaksa said that Sri Lanka is the only country in which there will be freedom of expression for everyone including the media.
President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has said that his government will neither suppress opposition voices nor interfere in the work of the judiciary. He also highlighted that social media is being misused to spread misinformation. Gotabaya has urged people to think twice before posting anything online.
The newspaper Colombo Page said that this year the theme of Independence Day has been kept as 'A Secure Nation - A Prosperous Country'. Before addressing the nation, Rajapaksa flagged off at Independence Square and took salute. On February 4, 1948, Independence Square was built to commemorate Sri Lanka's independence from British rule.
