Colombo: Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe resigned as Prime Minister on Saturday, clearing the way for an all-party government to take over. The Prime Minister previously stated that he is willing to resign in order for an all-party government to take over in the country. According to the Prime Minister's Media Division, the Prime Minister will resign once an all-party government is formed and a majority in Parliament is secured. 

Wickremesinghe's office stated that he will remain Prime Minister until then.

Wickremesinghe informed party leaders that he was stepping down because island-wide fuel distribution is set to resume this week, the World Food Programme Director is set to visit the country this week, and the debt sustainability report for the IMF is set to be completed soon. To ensure citizens' safety, the prime minister stated that he supports the Opposition party leaders' recommendation.

after the resignation The party leaders had decided to ask Wickremesinghe and Gotabaya to resign in order to establish an all-party government. "To ensure the continuation of the Government, including the safety of all citizens. 

The 22-million-person island is suffering from a severe foreign exchange shortage, which has limited essential imports of fuel, food, and medicine, plunging it into the worst financial crisis in seven decades. Thousands of people poured into Colombo's government district, chanting anti-President slogans and tearing down several police barricades on their way to Rajapaksa's house.
