Srinagar: Srinagar, a city in the Kashmir region, experienced a significant episode of heavy snowfall, resulting in the cancellation of all flights at the Srinagar airport. Officials cited continuous snowfall as the reason behind this decision. The snowfall brought an end to a prolonged dry spell in the Valley, creating a picturesque scene that delighted both local residents and tourists.
Despite the challenging weather conditions, the Srinagar-Jammu national highway remained open for traffic, according to reports from the traffic department. While there was some snowfall in higher reaches and parts of the Valley three days ago, the recent episode has blanketed the entire Kashmir region in a thick layer of white snow.
As of now, there have been no reports of significant power breakdowns due to the snowfall, providing a sense of relief to the local population. Typically, Kashmir witnesses substantial snowfall in December, especially during the 40-day-long Chillai Kalan, known as the harshest winter period starting on December 21 every year and ending on January 30.
However, this winter was notably devoid of significant snowfall, contributing to unusual weather conditions in the Valley. Currently, the region is in the midst of a 20-day-long 'Chilla-i-Khurd' (small cold), which will be followed by a 10-day 'Chilla-i-Bachha' (baby cold), marking different phases of the winter season.
