Chennai: ISRO Chairman K Sivan, the chief architect for successfully launching Mission Chandrayaan 2, has been honoured by the Palaniswamy government of Tamil Nadu. He was honoured with the Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Award by the State Government. He have been given in view of their contribution to the science and technology sector of the country. He was scheduled to be rewarded during the Independence Day celebrations on August 15, but that could not happen. The government had then said that the award would be given to Sivan at the hands of later CM Palaniswamy.

Later on Thursday, the ISRO chief met Chief Minister Palaniswamy at the secretariat where the CM gave him the award. The award was given eight grams of gold medal, five lakh rupees cash and one citation. Kalam Award is given to those who work to promote scientific development, humanities and welfare of students. It is given by the Government of Tamil Nadu. In 2015, the late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa announced the award in the name of former President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.

Under the supervision of Sivan, ISRO successfully launched the second mission Chandrayaan 2 on the moon on July 22. 62-year-old Sivan is the first graduate in his family. After completing his master's degree in aerospace engineering from the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru, he joined ISRO. He has been awarded the Dr. Vikram Sarabhai Research Award in 1999.
