Chennai: MK Stalin, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday to seek the immediate release of 29 Indian fishermen and their 79 fishing boats. The Chief Minister was bringing the Prime Minister's attention to the third arrest of Tamil Nadu fisherman by the Sri Lankan navy in a matter of weeks. The tragedy has come as a harsh shock to the people of the state, he wrote in a letter to PM Modi.

Stalin said, 29 fishermen have been apprehended so far, including 11 who have been detained, while 79 fishing boats have been impounded by Sri Lankan officials. "I had thought that my frequent demands would result in a beneficial shift in the harsh climate that the fishermen of Tamil Nadu's Palk bay districts face when fishing in traditional waters. Unfortunately, there has been no hint of a decrease in the number of Tamil Nadu fisherman apprehended so far. Taking a larger view of the matter, I honestly feel that the issue deserves more serious attention and diplomatic remedies are developed at the right level," he stated.

He went on to say that the many arrests of Tamil Nadu fisherman by the Sri Lankan Navy, particularly in the recent past, necessitate a robust and coordinated response from the Indian government at the highest level.
