State government declares weekly holiday for police employees

The decision came after a nearly three-week-long review meeting between the Tamil Nadu Police and the government that police officers in the ranks of Grade II constables and head constables can now take one day off in a week. According to a senior police officer, Chief Minister MK Stalin resolved to provide weekly off to the employees, which was much needed as junior level personnel work 14 hours a day without breaks.

On the other hand, men and women in khaki are skeptical about the implementation of the order, given the failure of earlier efforts by several Director Generals of Police (DGPs). Meanwhile, some employees said that they would appreciate getting a day's salary if they worked on a day off. As a result the nature of business prevents me from taking leave, I prefer to work on weekly off. The earlier efforts were hampered due to paucity of personnel in the department. On July 31 this year, DGP C Silendra Babu issued a circular giving one day off to workers as well as compulsory leave on birthdays and wedding anniversaries.

Meanwhile, in 2019, the then DGP JK Tripathi issued a circular giving employees weekly off and requiring them to work in eight-hour shifts. However, the staff had to work overtime due to shortage of staff. In 2017, former DGP TK Rajendran issued a similar circular on weekly leave and salary compensation for employees working on their vacation days. In addition, employees were required to return to work within a month due to a backlog of outstanding paperwork.
