State power crisis: CM urges PM to take remedial measures

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy while expressing concern over shortage of coal and poor finances of power distribution companies, he urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to initiate remedial measures and monitor the power generation scenario on a daily basis. Jagan Mohan Reddy urged Modi to direct the Ministry of Coal and Railways to allot 20 coal rakes to thermal power stations in Andhra Pradesh.

He also sought revival of the stranded and non-working pit head coal plants on emergency basis irrespective of the proceedings before the National Company Law Tribunal. This will save coal transportation time and quantity limitations in transporting coal to non-pit head coal plants. He said that the deep-water well gas available with ONGC and Reliance can be supplied on an emergency basis to 2,300 MW stranded/non-working gas plants in the state.

Jagan Mohan Reddy said that post-Covid power demand in Andhra Pradesh has increased by 15 percent in the last six months and 20 percent in the last one month. He said this coupled with the shortage of coal is pushing the energy sector into turmoil. APGENCO's thermal power generating stations, which meet 45 per cent of the state's energy needs, hardly have coal stocks for a day or two. "This is a very dangerous situation and if the situation persists, the financial condition of the power distribution companies will worsen," he said. He also informed that more water is required in the present final stage of harvesting. If the power supply is cut off, the fields will dry up.
