New Delhi: The Ministry of Home Affairs has written to all states, union territories (UTs), central government departments, and ministries, requesting to commemorate anti-terrorism day on May 21 in a "befitting manner."

On May 13, chief secretaries of all state governments and administrators of all union territories, and secretaries of all ministries and departments of the Indian government,  reportedly received an email with the subject line "most immediate."

The letter emphasises the significance of the day, saying, "The 21st of May is designated as Anti-Terrorism Day each year. The goal of commemorating this day is to wean youth away from terrorism and the cult of violence by emphasising the hardships of ordinary people and demonstrating how it harms the national interest."  It was also proposed that all government offices, public sector undertakings, and other public institutions adopt the anti-terrorism pledge.

Officials may be instructed to sign an anti-terrorism pledge seriously in their rooms and offices themselves, keeping in mind the safety of participants and organisers and the desire to avoid public gatherings, it stated. "Accordingly, I respectfully beg that you mark Anti-Terrorism Day in a dignified manner,"  noted the official concerned issuing the letter from the Ministry of Home Affaris.

Notably, various anti-terrorism programmes and drives have been organised in the past to attain the above goal.
