There are a number of cases coming to light from all over the world in which a woman in France was sentenced to death by a court in connection with the murder of her rapist husband, after which she was greeted with applause. Valerie Bekot, a woman, shot dead stepfather-turned-husband Daniel Polet in 2016.
The woman had served more time in jail than the prescribed sentence on the date of hearing after which a group of women working for women's rights started protesting to free her. The woman who killed her husband Daniel Polet in 2016 was sentenced to four years in prison with a three-year suspension. He was sentenced by a court in Saon-at-Lawyer, eastern France. The decision was welcomed with applause in the courtroom. After the sentence was released, some friends and family members of Baikot burst into tears.
Announcing the jury's decision, Judge Celine Tharam said "the court had recognized the "punishment" that Bekot had endured for years. Prosecutors had told the court that 40-year-old Bakot should not go back to jail, as she was clearly suffering at the hands of her tyrannical husband." Bekot was only 12 years old when Polet, who was then her mother's lover, raped her for the first time. Polette was initially imprisoned after being raped, but continued to abuse her even after she was released from captivity, and became pregnant when she was 17 years old.
