NEW DELHI: The centre has said that strict action will be taken against companies that do not pay minimum wages to their employees for their work. The companies against whom complaints will come in this regard will be investigated and stringent action will be taken against those who do not comply with the norms.

Replying to a supplementary question in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, Minister of Personnel and Public Grievances Jitendra Singh said that the Modi government has amended the Minimum Wages Act in 2017 and it has happened after 65 years. The minimum wage has been increased by 40 per cent.

It has been increased from 18 thousand rupees to 24 thousand rupees. A law has been enacted and the matter will be looked into and stringent action will be taken against the culprits in case of complaint of those who are not complying with the law. She said her government is paying special attention to the interests of women employees. The maternity leave has been increased from 12 weeks to 24 weeks.

The government has launched the Prime Minister's Employment Scheme which has been simplified from April 1, 2016. He said his government is committed to the cause of private sector employees. There is also a portal for the convenience of the workers in which complaints can be lodged. On the question of reservation in contractual appointments, he said, such facilities are being provided in institutions where appointments are made for more than 45 days but it is not possible to implement reservation where contractors make appointments. Contractors employ people according to their own preferences.
