Mumbai: The first rains of the season in Mumbai were accompanied by a massive dust storm today around 3 pm, casting a dark shadow over the city's skyline. While the rainfall brought relief from the heat to Mumbai residents and those in adjoining areas, dusty winds encircled the metropolitan, causing a sudden change in weather.

The abrupt weather shift brought traffic to a standstill as commuters sought shelter during the storm. Strong winds and rain were reported in Ghatkopar, Bandra Kurla, and Dharavi areas of Mumbai. Mumbai's airport, one of the busiest in the country, suspended landing and takeoff operations until further notice, officials confirmed.

According to the weather office, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and moderate to intense spells of rain, with gusty winds reaching 50-60 km/hr, are expected to occur at isolated places in the districts of Palghar and Thane over the next 3-4 hours.

The strong winds caused trees to fall in several areas. In Navi Mumbai, a tree fell on a busy road in Airoli Sector 5. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but traffic came to a halt as commuters parked their vehicles at a safe distance, braving the heavy winds.
