"Having brothers or sisters as children has no bearing on our personalities as adults". Researchers from Leipzig University, the University of Zurich, and Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand came to this conclusion after conducting an international study. The findings have now been released in the esteemed publication "Psychological Science."

Since siblings are so important in childhood, it makes sense to think that over time, they have an impact on one another's personality. In fact, psychological studies have been examining the issue of whether growing up with brothers or sisters affects a person's personality for more than 50 years.

Researchers have regularly investigated into whether siblings can affect how much their offspring exhibit traditional "gender-conforming" traits, or traits that are "usually male" or "typically female" in society. Due in part to the fact that older studies frequently relied on scant and flimsy data, there are numerous assumptions and conflicting results on this.

A team of experts has now analysed data from over 80,000 adults from nine nations, including Germany and the US, Mexico and China, to provide light on the previously contradictory data situation. This was made feasible by numerous nationwide longitudinal studies that methodically collect data on people over decades, including their living circumstances and psychological traits identified in various ways. This data's statistical analysis demonstrated that personality qualities including risk-taking, emotional stability, conscientiousness, and patience are not systematically correlated with the gender of their siblings across national boundaries.
