The COVID-19 virus can be entirely inactivated with a 30-second exposure to a 100 ppm molecular iodine (I2) mouth rinse, according to a new study from Utah State University's Institute for Antiviral Research. This in vitro study suggests that more research is needed, as well as a review of past and current research on the efficacy of I2 as an antibacterial treatment agent. Iodine 2 is the only antibacterial iodine species.

It is well known that molecular iodine is one of the most efficient antimicrobials on the market. Even though it contains extremely minute levels of I2, povidone-iodine (Betadine) is used as a standard of care in infection control in hospitals and medical facilities all over the world. Betadine (PVP-1) has been in commercial use since 1955 and is listed as an essential medication by the World Health Organization.

Although PVP-1 contains 31,600-ppm of iodine compounds, the biocidal species accountable for its antibacterial action is merely I2. I2 is found in trace amounts of 2–3 ppm, yet even at these concentrations, it is thought to be the most effective at killing bacteria, viruses, and fungi. PVP-1's additional properties only add to its toxicity, staining, and awful taste.

PVP-1 has been utilised as a scrub for surgeries as well as hand disinfection for surgical employees in hospitals and health-care clinics for more than 50 years. PVP-1 has also been demonstrated to be useful in treating periodontal disease. It is a valuable antiseptic in the treatment of periodontal disease and a range of other mouth infections, according to Jrgen Slots. In vitro, it kills all periodontal bacteria in 15–20 seconds, according to his studies. According to Slots, it has a broad viricidal range that includes both nonenveloped and enveloped viruses, as well as the periodontopathogenic cytomegalovirus.

This new formulation improves the product's effectiveness, safety, and shelf life while also lowering stains, toxicity, unpleasant taste, and irritation risk. IoTech International presently offers it in mouthrinses, concentrates, nasal sprays, and hand sanitizers. 6 These novel products could be used as a first line of protection against the COVID-19 pandemic.
