Study reveals, infection with Omicron improves Delta neutralising immunity

Cases of Omicron are quickly spreading over the world, and they are frequently associated with infections caused by the Delta variant. A new study headed by an international team of researchers from South Africa, the United States, and Germany has found that the vaccination avoiding Omicron boosts Delta variant neutralising immunity.

The study included both previously vaccinated and unvaccinated patients who were infected with SARS-CoV-2 in the Omicron infection wave in South Africa shortly after symptom onset. It was put on a pre-print server and has not yet been peer-reviewed.  The researchers then measured their ability to neutralise both Omicron and Delta virus at enrollment versus a median of two weeks after enrollment.

The findings revealed that Omicron neutralisation rose 14-fold over time, indicating a growing antibody response to the variation. There was a significant rise in Delta virus neutralisation, which increased 4.4-fold.

"The increased ability of Delta to re-infect persons infected with Omicron may be due to increased Delta variant neutralisation," said Prof Alex Sigal, a virologist at the Africa Health Research Institute. "When comparing Omicron and Delta neutralisation, it was found that vaccinated participants were able to mount a better neutralising response against Delta virus, whereas unprotected persons' responses were more variable," Sigal explained.
