Due to the fact that many children has missed the regular vaccines, researchers stressed a major measles outbreaks across the world as early as 2021. Measles is a highly contagious illness caused by a virus that replicates in the nose and throat of an infected child or adult. A study published recently in a journal has called for a urgent international action to prevent potentially devastating measles epidemics in the upcoming years.
“Many children have missed out on measles vaccination this year, making future measles outbreaks inevitable,” said the study lead author Kim Mulholland from the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute in Australia and Chair of the World Health Organization‘s SAGE Working Group on measles and rubella vaccines. Childhood malnutrition is the condition resulted due to restricted travel, covid 19 control measures and the worst economic impacts. “Children who die from measles are often malnourished, but acute measles pushes many surviving children into malnutrition,” he said.
He warns that malnutrition in association with immunity suppression (missed vaccine schedule), delays mortality and the coexisting Vitamin A deficiency may lead to blindness. A recent estimate by WHO reveals that by the end of October 2020, delayed vaccination campaigns in 26 countries have led to 94 million children missing scheduled measles vaccine doses. All these factors will be the platform for a several measles outbreak in 2021 accompanied by increased death rate.
