A petition was filed in the Supreme Court demanding the declaration of Ram Setu as an ancient historical monument. After which BJP MP and Senior Advocate Subramanian Swamy have demanded an early hearing on the petition. Following his demand, the Supreme Court has asked to appeal after three months. The Sethusamudram project was announced in the year 2005 under the Congress-led UPA government. At that time its cost was around 2500 crores which have now increased to 4000 crores. Under this project, two channels, about 83 kilometers long, were to be built for transporting large ships.

Two channels were to be built to reduce the time taken for the movement of ships. So that the total time can be reduced by 30 hours. One of these channels also has to pass through the Ram Setu. It is also called Adams Bridge. On this route between Sri Lanka and India, the ships have to go through a longer route due to the lower sea depth.

Along with religious beliefs, BJP also believes that Ram Sethu was built by Lord Shri Ram. This led to the controversy over Ram Sethu in the year 2007, when the UPA government proposed that no alternative other than Ram Sethu is financially profitable for the Sethusamudram project. However, religious and environmental activists were opposed to the project. After this the matter reached the Supreme Court.
