Sudan has emphasised the importance of finding a legal and enforceable solution to the long-standing conflict between the two neighbouring nations over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on the Nile River.

Sudan's acting Foreign Minister Ali Al-Sadiq and acting Irrigation and Water Resources Minister Daw Al-Bait Abdul-Rahman met to discuss the GERD issue and reiterate Sudan's support for discussion as a solution, according to a statement released by the Foreign Ministry.

According to reports, the summit highlighted the importance of reaching a legal and binding solution under the auspices of the African Union (AU) that protects Sudan's interests and water rights.  Sudan's negotiating team and active participation in the GERD issue received renewed backing from the acting Foreign Minister.

Sudan, Egypt, and Ethiopia have been negotiating under the auspices of the African Union over technical and legal issues concerning the GERD's filling and operation. Sudan suggested a GERD mediation quartet consisting of the United Nations, the European Union, the United States, and the African Union, but Ethiopia rejected the plan.
