New Delhi: Long queues were seen at liquor shops in the national capital on Saturday. On Saturday, some liquor shops in Delhi had announced a discount on all brands of liquor. As soon as the news of the price of liquor being exempted was received, a crowd of people was seen at the shops. In fact, liquor shops in Delhi's Jahangirpuri, Shahdara, Mayur Vihar, Ashok Nagar and many other areas had announced a discount of up to 35 per cent on some special brands. According to the report, on the crowd at a liquor shop, a liquor shop worker in east Delhi said that liquor shops will have to exhaust their stock by the end of March as the licence will be renewed in the new financial year.

"There are some brands that have not sold at all, so shoppers want to clear their stock through special offers like 'buy one, get one free'," he said. Along with alcohol, such offers were also given on beer. A senior official of the Excise Department said that behind the long lines at liquor shops, there were many other reasons like wedding season, weekends and following social distancing norms.

The same liquor traders say that due to the price cut, people made a large number of purchases. 'The shops near the border cities of Haryana and UP were more crowded due to competition between retailers to attract more customers.'
