Palghar: A major incident is coming to light from Maharashtra's Palghar district where the motorman of a local train suffered head injuries at Naigaon station here on Saturday when a metal hook of a crane hit the front of the local train. The incident took place at platform number one of Naigaon station at around 12.55 am when the last local from Mumbai to Virar was arriving there, said Sumit Thakur, chief spokesperson of Western Railway.
Due to the intervening night of Friday and Saturday, a block was strategized on platform number one of Naigaon station for the erection of a lift steel column. The crane was being kept parallel to the track for that work. But suddenly the transgenders pelted heavy stones at him, due to which the crane driver got injured in his right thumb. At the same time, the local train going to Virar was entering the station. But since the crane operator had injured his hand, he found it difficult to operate and control the machine and its hook hit the glass frame of the local train. He said this caused a slight bend in the frame.
The motorman suffered minor injuries and was given first aid. The officer said that after this the train was evacuated and taken to Virar car shed. He said, "It was a very unfortunate incident. The motorman suffered minor injuries, but there was no major damage to the train. Train operations have returned and we are taking utmost care to ensure safety at the work site". Members of the motorman community have expressed concerns about their safety. A motorman said that the passengers and crew of the local train had a narrow escape as a major accident could have happened if the train had not slowed down.
