Sugar Cane farmers protest in UP, demand immediate payment of dues

Lucknow: Cane farmers' dues are running out in UP. There is a lot of resentment among the farmers about this. The farmers' body, the National Farmer's Labour Organisation, staged a statewide protest to put pressure on the government. The protesters have demanded early payment of cane dues from sugar mills in several districts and interest to be paid as per the orders of the High Court after the cane payment dues in the last year. Farmers will stage a dharna on Monday at the office of UP Sugarcane Commissioner and all district headquarters.

Sugarcane farmers are demanding that the state government pay interest to farmers at the rate of 15 per cent per annum in the crushing season 2011-12. According to its affidavit in the court, the state government sought interest at the rate of 7 per cent per annum for the same season 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15. Sugarcane farmers are also demanding payment of interest for the crushing season 2015-16 at the rate of 15-16 per cent.

The convener of the National Farmer-Labour Organisation, V.M.Singh has said that the state government should respect the court verdict on August 6, 2012. He said, till the outstanding payment including interest is paid to the farmers, no recovery of agricultural loans can be made. The Union has appealed to CM Yogi Adityanath of the province to intervene in the matter and ensure justice to the farmers.
