There has been a decline in sugar production in the country. In the current marketing year until December 15, the country's sugar production has fallen by 35 percent to 4.58 million tonnes. This decrease in sugar production has come due to sharp decline in production from Maharashtra and Karnataka. Industrial organization ISMA has given this information on Wednesday. The marketing year of sugar is from October to September. Mills produced 7.05 million tonnes of sugar in the same period of the marketing year 2018-19.

According to the Indian Sugar Mill Association (ISMA), on December 15, 406 sugar mills are producing sugar from sugarcane, while 473 mills were producing sugar on the same day a year ago. The mills in Uttar Pradesh, the country's largest sugar producing state, have produced 2.12 million tonnes of sugar as of December 15, up from 1.89 million tonnes a year earlier. The mills of Uttar Pradesh started crushing of sugarcane a week in the current season.

In addition, the country's second-largest sugar producing state Maharashtra has recorded a sharp decline in sugar production. ISMA has reported that 7,66,000 tonnes of sugar has been produced this time as compared to 2.9 million tonnes produced in the same period a year ago. Similarly, in the third-largest sugar-producing a state of the country, sugar production has been 1.06 million tonnes as on December 15, compared to 1.39 million tonnes in the same period a year ago. ISMA said in a release that the reasons for the shortfall in production in Maharashtra and Karnataka have been delayed by one month and one week by mills in these states.
