NEW DELHI: India's Young tennis player Sumit Nagal has qualified for the main draw of the US Open, where he will take on third seed Roger Federer in the first round. This will be Sumit's first Grand Slam match. Sumit has become the first Indian to make a place in the main draw of a Grand Slam under the age of 25.
The 2015 Wimbledon junior doubles champion Sumit defeated Joao Menjas of Brazil 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 in the third and final round of the U.S. Open qualifying. Sumit Nagle is the second Indian to qualify for the main draw of the men's singles of this US Open. Prajesh Guneshwaran has made a direct entry to the tournament before him.
In the main draw, Prajesh will take on ATP Cincinnati Masters winner Daniel Medvedev. Earlier in the qualifying, Sumil defeated his top-ranked players Peter Polanski and Tatsum in straight sets. With this, 22-year-old Sumeet has joined the club of Indian male players who made it to the main draw of a Grand Slam singles in this decade. This time, two Indian players are competing in the main draw of the men's singles. Earlier, it happened in 1998, when Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes landed in Wimbledon.
