Sumitranandan Pant, one of the four major pillars of the 'Shady era', is also said to be the originator of the new stream of Hindi poetry. This era is being called the era of poets like Jaishankar Prasad, Mahadevi Varma, Suryakant Tripathi 'Nirala', Pant and Ram Kumar Verma. Sumitranandan Pant never bowed down to traditionalist critics. He is also counted among the litterateurs whose depiction of nature in poetry was the best among contemporary poets. Pant was also influenced by Mahatma Gandhi and had done many works. Sumitranandan Pant, the author of the Sukomal poems, said goodbye to this world on December 27, 1977.
Pant's childhood: Sumitranandan Pant was born on May 20, 1900, in Kausani village of Almora district of Uttarakhand. His mother died six hours after his birth. As a child, he was all known as 'Gusain Dutt'. After his mother's death, he lived with his grandmother. At the age of 7, when he was studying in the fourth grade, he started writing poetry. In 1917, Pant moved to Kashi with his middle brother and started studying at Queen's College. From here he also got secondary education.
How Sumitranandan Pant become a Gusai: He did not like his name Gusain Dutt, so he changed his name to Sumitranandan Pant. After studying for a few days at Queen's College in Kashi, he went to Allahabad and started studying in The Mayur College there. He used to earn his living in a government bungalow near the court in Allahabad. He also worked as a consultant in the early days of Allahabad All India Radio.
