New Delhi: An RTI reply has been revealed about how 'serious' the government of Delhi's Arvind Kejriwal is about pollution. According to a report by The Sunday Guardian, the Kejriwal government has raised Rs 883 crore in the name of the environment in the last four years. However, only 1.6 percent of this amount has been spent on stopping pollution. That is, out of Rs 883 crores, only 141,280,000 rupees have been spent to stop pollution.

This surprising revelation has been made by the Transport Department of the Government of Delhi itself in response to the RTI filed by the Sunday Guardian. According to the information provided by the department, the Delhi government raised Rs 503 crore in the name of environment tax in the year 2017, Rs 228 crore in the year 2018 and Rs 110 crore in the year 2019. Along with this, the government has raised Rs 4 crore till September in the year 2020 in the name of environmental cess.

The report states that the Delhi government levies environment tax as a compensation charge. A large part of it is recovered from trucks that enter Delhi on the coming days and due to which pollution is spread. It has been further stated in this information that the Delhi government has been spending only a very small part of the environmental cess to stop pollution for years.
